In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
