Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these medications should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
